What Is a Discipleship Making Movement (DMM)?

1. A Simple Beginning
In many places today, people attend church for years but never learn
how to follow Jesus daily or help others follow Him. Churches may grow
in numbers, buildings, or programs, yet communities remain unchanged.
Many believers depend on pastors, missionaries, or church buildings
instead of living out their faith where they live.
Jesus had a different plan.
He did not build a temple, start an institution, or create a complex
system. He walked with ordinary people, taught them to obey God, and
sent them to do the same for others. This simple way of following Jesus is
what we call a Discipleship Making Movement (DMM).
A DMM helps ordinary believers become disciple-makers who start small
fellowship groups—right in their homes, neighborhoods, workplaces, or
villages.
2. What Is a Discipleship Making Movement?
A Discipleship Making Movement (DMM) is a movement of ordinary
people who:
Follow Jesus
Obey His Word
Make disciples who make more disciples
Start simple churches that multiply naturally
DMM is not:
A church program
A denomination
A building project
A pastor-centered system
DMM is:
Obedience-based discipleship
Led by the Holy Spirit
Reproduced by new believers
Focused on multiplication, not addition
In a DMM, every believer understands this truth:
“I am a disciple of Jesus, and I am called to make disciples.”
3. The Biblical Foundation of DMM
DMM is not a modern idea. It is the way Jesus and the early church lived.
Jesus’ Command
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations… teaching them to obey
everything I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:19–20)
Jesus did not say “make converts” or “build churches.”
He said make disciples and teach them to obey.
Jesus’ Method
In Luke 10, Jesus sent ordinary disciples to homes, not buildings. They
shared peace, healed the sick, and proclaimed God’s Kingdom. New
communities of faith were formed in homes.
The Early Church
“They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere
hearts.” (Acts 2:46)
The church multiplied because believers lived their faith daily and shared
it naturally.
5. Why DMM Works in Our Context
DMM works especially well in Africa and similar regions because:
It does not require buildings or money
It fits community and family life
It works among the poor, displaced, and persecuted
It empowers women, youth, and families
It grows even where Christianity is restricted
In places where pastors are few and needs are many, DMM releases
every believer into ministry.
6. What Happens in a Simple DMM Fellowship?
A typical fellowship group includes:
Prayer
Worship (songs, psalms, thanksgiving)
Scripture reading
Discussion
Obedience commitments
Planning who to reach next
There is no sermon. Everyone participates. Everyone grows.
7. Your Role in God’s Movement
God does not need perfect people.
He uses willing and obedient hearts.
You may think:
“I am new in faith.”
“I am not educated.”
“I am not a leader.”
Jesus said:
“Follow me, and I will make you fishers of people.” (Matthew 4:19)
If you follow Him, He will make you into a disciple-maker.
